Skin colour is determined by the amount and type of the pigment melanin in the skin. Melanin comes in two types: phaeomelanin (red to yellow) and eumelanin (dark brown to black). Both amount and type are determined by 4-6 genes, which operate under incomplete dominance and are inherited from the father and one from the mother, resulting in a great variety of different skin colours with varying depth.

Being richer in fats, it secretes a greater quantity of sebum, which offers more protection, but sun protection is definitely still advised as darker skin is actually prone to skin cancer. Skin of colour contains a higher quantity of lipids, making the skin tighter and more compact. This skin type is less prone to dehydration and has a much better heat tolerance than fair skin, which leads to the misconception that it needs less protection from harmful UV rays.

The Placécol Renaissance skin care range has been developed in South Africa and addresses the unique needs of the many women with skin of colour in our country. The range consists of nine products featuring a combination of ground breaking ingredients.

Radiance CR, contained in Renaissance Even Tone Lotion SPF15, is a mixture of vitamins and actives that reduces skin roughness and barrier susceptibility, whilst enhancing skin recovery. Placécol is the only company that has the worldwide licence to use this unique patented material in a skin care range.
Clinical trials have concluded that it is effective in increasing the even tone of the skin.

The patented anti-acne active, Acnacidol R, is contained in Renaissance Skin Clearing Gel and reduces the sebum synthesis and inhibits the activity of acne causing bacteria, leading to an improvement in your skin appearance.

Mongongo nut oil is contained in Renaissance HydroProtect Day Lotion SPF15, Renaissance Restoring Night Cream and Renaissance Even Tone Lotion SPF15. This oil has restructuring properties and forms a protective film over hair fibres.
